For an annual fee I could open a private parlor w/2 tournaments(1 elim and 1 round robin).
There seems to be some concern regarding socializing on the site, due to the alert system Hank has put in place to hopefully increase tournament play.
The tournament msg boards are being limited to tournament related chat so that people won't be bombarded with people's personal comments in their alerts.
And the openplay msg board has been shut down all together for personal comments.
This brings up the idea of a private parlor. The parlor would have Chat rooms in which we could socialize freely. Of course, as in any community, there will be pushback on extreme rudeness.
We can discuss, debate, give our opinions, joke around, post pics of your ugly pets, recipes, quotes from your favorite Philosophers, and whatnot.
There would be as many people who are interested. Realistically, we could have 30-40 people. 16(elim) 8-12 round robin and several alternates(for when people need time off.
I would also bump 2-3 low players and no shows for 1 tour to make sure we always have enough players to fill the tourneys)).
At this point, I am only reaching out to get opinions. Also asking you to chime in w/ a yea or nay. As far as the cost, I will figure out if this seems to be something a good number of people wish to participate in.
If this doesn't fly w/a couple dozen or more people, I will bag on the idea. I personally think this would be fun and I would do my best to make this a fun place to hang out.
Thank you for your consideration! --BigMur--

Any tournament chat board you are associated with, whenever a new chat comes into the board, you will see a red-dot-flag at the top of the page.
This information in these chat boards may be useful to some, but not to others who are not interested seeing alerts for these boards.
To stop alerts from tournaments you're not interested in, go to the Dashboard , then look for the "Parlour and Tournament Chat board monitors" near the lower part of the main dashboard page. You'll see a button to flush your associations with all the tournament parlour chat boards.
"Reset my chat-alert associations of recent parlour room visits."
Be sure to read the information there, it talks about your email-opt-in state, and TD-delegation state. And of course, if you're a participant in the active tournament, you will not be exempt from these alerts for the rooms.
Keep in mind, that if you clear all your associations and flush the cache as described in the Dashboard, you'll no longer be alerted of chats in those rooms.
However, if you re-enter the room of a tournament, you'll once again be associated with the tournament, and chat alerts for the room will resume. You'll want to repeat the process of flushing the chat cache to stop it.

US Laws Regarding Organizations That Award Cash Prizes |

Anyone have knowledge in the US laws regarding the ability for an organization to facilitate cash prize awards for tournament competitions?
Quote:1982: In New York City, backgammon is not considered a game of chance. According to Armando Flores, of the city public morals division, his office would not prosecute backgammon as gambling. Search
The determination is whether skill or chance is the dominant element. Skill requires:
- A Developed or Practicable Ability
- Strategy or Tactic
- Physical Coordination
- Technical Prowess
- Knowledge of How to Accomplish A Task
As a guide, if the outcome can be improved by practice and experience, even if there is still an element of chance, it's a game of skill.
So, poker, chess, backgammon, checkers, pool, darts, cricket, football, athletics, boxing, and even horse racing are all games of skill. Awarding prizes on the outcome of those events is not gambling.
However, placing side bets on the outcome is gambling.
To participate in a cash-prize tournament, players must meet certain requirements, such as being a certain age or having a certain level of skill. Players are required to pay an entry fee in order to participate.
The tournament would be made up of gammon match play of specific length and rule-set.
