Players' names jumping in Players List
Posted by: - 04-09-2023, 02:34 AM - Forum: General - Replies (1)

Hi
I keep wondering, if I'd be the only one who is annoyed by the behavior of the players' list in the Openplay parlour Opponents list.
Items in the list can only be sorted by that "Sort" button, which offers to sort after "Most relevant"(?).
Also, the items on that list keep jumping around.
Is there a deeper meaning with that?

Cheers
/T

Recent Questions Seen in the Chat Boards
Posted by: - 03-28-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Trish's Corner - No Replies

Question: How do you see what your ELO is?

The best place to see your ELO is on the Dashboard Player Stats Page .

Question: Why does it seem the dice auto-roll is enabling itself?

The dice will indeed automatically engage in an auto-roll state whenever your turn is in a position of no moves.
One example is when you have one or more checkers on the bar and your opponent has a full block in the HOME
board and the double-cube is not in play for you.

Question: How can I see if my opponent is actively viewing the playboard of our match?

There are a couple of ways to detect if an opponent is viewing the playboard.
                    1)  There is a red, yellow, or green dot in the upper left corner of the opponent avatar shown on the /play/ link.
When your opponent is active, the dot will be green or yellow when they viewed the board in the last few minutes.
And red otherwise.  At times this dot may be flashing a white/red pattern. This is an indicator that your opponent is
active at the site and is viewing one of the pages that will notify them if it is their turn.
                    2)   The Dashboard Matches page shows all your unfinished matches.  Whenever your opponent is actively viewing the
match, a green lightbulb icon is shown in the list nearest the player's name. The lightbulb icon will appear grey otherwise.

Question: Is there a setting for me to play against "the computer"?

No. SimplyBG is 100%, real players.

Introduction to the Raptor League Backgammon Tournament
Posted by: - 03-21-2023, 11:29 AM - Forum: Raptor League - No Replies

The Raptor League is the biggest tournament on SimplyBG. Made up of 36 players divided into three divisions ie 12 players per division.

Every month, except for June and December, when the league is on break, every player plays all the other members of their division once in a 7-point backgammon match - so three Match-Play backgammon-matches a week.

The matches results are converted into "League Points" - three for a win, nothing for a loss plus an extra point to the winner if the margin of victory is 4 or more, or an extra point for the loser if they get close.

At the end of every month, the three leaders of each division are promoted to play in a higher division and the three lowest placed are relegated down a division. Thus the Eagles are the 12 strongest players in the league, the Hawks the next tier, and the Falcons the lowest ranked.

To join the League you have to work your way up, firstly by joining the Fledglings and achieving third place or better ..... and then you have to strive each month to improve your ranking or hold on to your place!

  The Meetup Tab
Posted by: - 03-06-2023, 05:43 AM - Forum: Trish's Corner - Replies (1)

I don't know how many of you have used the Meetup tab shown next to your active match play board.

I used it today for the first time to schedule a time with my opponent to meet.  And it is a winner!

When you go to the dashboard it is the first item that is loaded up as a reminder that you commit.

In the Unfinished Matches Dashboard , the match item with meet-up times will display a summary of your and your opponent's "Meeting Times Offered".

Helpful to schedule playing times with opponents across the world.

Common Nomenclatures of the Backgammon Board
Posted by: - 03-05-2023, 08:44 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

In our discussions and documentation on the game of Backgammon, we often want to refer to the board using common names.

Here are some common names you can use in your discussions of the backgammon board:

The backgammon board has 24 triangles referred to as "points" on the board.

The board has four segments referred to as Home (aka Inner), Outer, Opponent Outer, and Opponent Home.

Your Home board may also be referred to as your Inner board.

Your Home board contains points numbered 1 thru 6. On the opposite side, the Opponent Home board contains points numbered 19 thru 24.

The points have common nicknames for them.  Point 7, just outside of your Home board is referred to as your Bar Point. Point 18 is your opponent's Bar point.  Point 13 is referred to as your Midpoint (12 your opponent's Midpoint). And point 5 is often referred to as the Golden Point.

For more details and useful references, see the Backgammon Game Basic page at the SimplyBG.com Backgammon Play Venue .

For use in your content within this forum, you can show dice in your text using [die]1..6[/die].  Dice appear as: , , etc.

What is your best opening move?
Posted by: - 03-05-2023, 04:26 AM - Forum: Trish's Corner - Replies (4)

Hi everyone.

I was looking through an article and they said:

Quote:The best opening roll (3-1) only gives that player a 55% chance to win.

I found it interesting that an opening roll could give you a better chance of winning.

I am curious what others thought.  Is there an opening roll, like 3-1, that is the best opening roll to determine if you win?

What do you think?

For an aid describing the backgammon board, see the Common Nomenclatures of the Backgammon Board

Lightbulb Handicap/Team Tournaments
Posted by: - 03-03-2023, 07:19 AM - Forum: General - Replies (7)

Are you interesting in participating in a just for fun tournament with handicaps?

I am experimenting with handicaps in a just-for-fun tournament. For example, someone with an ELO of, say 1500, would start out with 2 points ahead in the a 7 point match when playing somebody with an larger ELO, like say of 1600.

These matches would be unrated therefor no ELO changes will occur on the outcome of the match.

This type of competition might open the doors for stronger players to offer playing time to those with lower ELOs giving those an opportunity to improve with experience. Unrated handicap play would introduce advice and feedback during play by either opponent, spectators, team members, etc.  Gaining support for knowing when to run, hit, offer the cube, decline the cube, etc.

Interested? Post a reply here to let me know.

  Tournaments across timezones
Posted by: - 02-04-2023, 11:29 AM - Forum: General - Replies (3)

Hey friends

this has probably been discussed before, but I still feel that I have to bring it to attention again.
I've completely stopped playing tournaments, because the fact that participants are spread across wide apart timezones put way too much on my scheduling.
Been thinking about specific tournaments per continent, or even per timezone.
What's your thoughts about that?

Cheers, and thx to the admins for setting this forum up!
Have a great weekend,

Thomas, from Amtoft, Nordjylland
